A week at a Tudor manor in the Lake District

A week at a Tudor manor in the Lake District

When accommodation costs in the Lake District keep climbing, finding a way to stay there affordably without compromising on the experience is something a lot of people are quietly working out. Earlier in May 2026, for Nick and Sarah, the answer was a five-night stay at a Tudor manor near Penrith through FarFrom, contributing a few hours of practical help each day in return for a private self-contained cottage on a historic estate.

Here's the week in Nick's own words.

The setting

We chose this place specifically because we love the Lake District, but with accommodation and fuel costs where they are, it was getting harder to justify. Staying at a Tudor manor near Penrith and helping out for a few hours each morning felt like the perfect answer.

The first to greet us when we arrived was Styx, the family dog, who made sure we knew he was happy we were there and kept checking in on us throughout the week. The cottage was lovely, and from the back we had views over a field of baby lambs. We even got to bottle-feed them on our first night!

What we helped with

Over the five days we turned our hands to quite a variety of things across the estate.

In the ancient woodland, we removed tree protectors from trees that had grown tall enough not to need them anymore. We reused the same protectors on some newly planted trees and weeded around their bases to give them the best start. In the walled garden, Henry and Anna had noticed a fox sniffing around the chicken coop, so we spent a few hours making it properly secure: fitting a new door, running chicken wire over one of the gates, and building a wire fence along the top of an old stone wall to stop anything climbing over. We also filled in any gaps around the coop itself.

We helped fill large containers in the polytunnel with barrowloads of compost and bark, ready for growing fruit and veg. Around the pig field we planted some new whips and protected them with tree protectors. We also helped move some heavy furniture around the hall, which gave us a rare look inside the historic building. Portraits on the walls, a spiral staircase, antique furniture throughout. It's a place that's genuinely steeped in history and we felt lucky to see behind those walls. We finished the week with some sanding and painting of doors that needed attention.

Honestly, none of it felt like a chore. Sarah and I both enjoy gardening at home in Norfolk, so helping someone else with their land came naturally.

Exploring the Lake District on our time off

Mornings were for helping out. The afternoons and our days off were ours to enjoy, and we made the most of them.

We used the AllTrails app to find walks and it didn't let us down. We found a route near Ullswater that took us past Aira Force waterfall, explored local villages, and stopped at farm cafes serving proper Cumbrian produce. Coming from Norfolk where everything is flat, being out in open countryside every day was a proper reset. After a few hours of outdoor work in the morning and a long walk in the afternoon, we both slept better than we had in a long time!

Would we go back?

Without hesitation. The hosts were genuinely welcoming, the work suited us perfectly given what we enjoy doing anyway, and the Lake District delivered everything we hoped for. We'd love to return and help with more around the estate.
