A step-by-step guide to
work-for-accommodation travel
Volunteering with FarFrom is simple. You help hosts for a few hours each day, and in return, you get free accommodation in beautiful UK locations. Here's how to get started.
Understand how work-for-accommodation works.
It's simple concept that's been around for decades: you contribute a few hours of help each day, whether that's gardening, animal care or maintenance, and in exchange, your host provides accommodation.
It's not about working for free. It's about exchanging value. You bring your skills and enthusiasm; hosts provide a comfortable place to stay and often much more; meals, local insights, and genuine connection.
Discover experiences you won't find elsewhere.
FarFrom connects you with unique UK properties that aren't found anywhere else. From working farms with lambs and alpacas to stately homes and countryside estates; these are places that welcome volunteers who want to help.
Arrive, contribute and enjoy.
Once accepted, coordinate your arrival with your host. When you arrive, you'll be shown around and introduced to your tasks. Most volunteers work in the mornings, leaving afternoons and evenings free to explore.
This isn't just about saving money; it's about having experiences you'd never have as a regular tourist. You'll learn new skills, meet interesting people, and discover parts of the UK most visitors never see.

No prior experience is required for most positions. Hosts value enthusiasm, reliability, and a willingness to learn. Each listing clearly states what skills are helpful, but many tasks can be taught on arrival.
Most hosts expect around 4-5 hours of help per day, typically 5 days per week. This leaves plenty of time to explore the area, relax, or pursue your own interests. Exact hours are agreed with your host before you arrive.
This varies by host. Some provide all meals, others offer breakfast essentials and kitchen access for you to cook your own meals. Each listing clearly states what's included so you can plan accordingly.
Stays typically range from one week to several months. The minimum and maximum stay length is set by each host and shown on their listing. Longer stays often lead to deeper connections and more meaningful experiences.
Good communication is key. If issues arise, speak openly with your host first. Our platform has a support team available to help mediate if needed. You're never obligated to stay somewhere you're uncomfortable.
