We are a unique Cold War and WWII heritage site in Edinburgh, set within a former military bunker and surrounding woodland. Volunteers have the opportunity to get involved in a wide range of hands-on projects, including heritage restoration, conservation, gardening, maintenance, animal care, events, and community activities. What makes this place special is that your efforts have a visible impact. Every day spent volunteering helps preserve an important piece of history while improving the site for future visitors. You’ll learn new skills, meet people from around the world, explore areas of the bunker not normally open to the public, and be part of an ambitious project that is transforming a forgotten historic site into a museum and community resource.

Volunteers assist with a wide range of projects throughout the year, helping to restore and preserve Barnton Bunker for future generations. Tasks vary with the seasons and may include heritage restoration, painting, maintenance, gardening, landscaping, woodland management, cleaning, organising displays, animal care, event preparation, and general site improvements. No specialist experience is required for most tasks, as guidance and training are provided. We welcome people who are enthusiastic, willing to learn, and happy to work as part of a team. There is always plenty to do, and volunteers can see the direct impact of their efforts as the site continues to develop and improve.

Accommodation

Private Room & Shared Bathroom
Volunteers can stay in simple shared accommodation within the site, which includes private rooms, as well as separate static caravans, or they can bring their own campervans. Accommodation includes a bed, storage space for personal belongings, access to shared kitchen and bathroom facilities, and communal areas for relaxing and socialising. Bedding is provided, but volunteers should bring their own towels. Wi-Fi is available, and there are spaces suitable for reading, studying, or using a laptop during free time. The accommodation is basic but comfortable and offers a unique opportunity to stay within a historic Cold War bunker while contributing to its restoration and preservation.

Located on the edge of Edinburgh, giving volunteers the best of both worlds: a peaceful historic site surrounded by nature, with easy access to one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. Edinburgh offers world-famous attractions including Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, museums, galleries, parks, and a vibrant arts and music scene. Closer to the site, there are woodland walks, beaches along the Firth of Forth, cycling routes, local cafés, and opportunities to explore Scotland’s rich history. Volunteers can enjoy the city’s festivals, cultural events, and nightlife, while also experiencing life at a unique heritage project helping to preserve an important part of Cold War history.
