Our home is a a quiet smallholding in rural mid-Wales. Alongside the farmhouse and adjoining barns there are fields for pasture, woodland, an orchard and a kitchen garden with polytunnel. In front of the house and barns there are cottage and courtyard gardens planted along permaculture lines with bee-friendly plants and shrubs. The beauty and quiet of this place, along with the lack of mobile signal and TV reception, is an opportunity to ‘disconnect’, to read, walk, pray, meditate, sit, look, listen, take things slowly and to enter into the quiet rhythm of this place. Tessa’s art studio is usually open along with the yoga mezzanine space. If you love the outdoors whatever the weather, are happy being practical, turning your hand to whatever crops up that day and learning new skills, you will be in your element here.

There is a whole variety of tasks for volunteers throughout the year. During the spring and summer there is sowing, pricking out, planting, harvesting and processing of vegetables and fruit. The vigorous Welsh grass means there is always weeding and grass-cutting. Autumn and winter, there is wood-splitting, maintenance of the woodland understory with bramble and nettles management, creation of deadwood hedging. All year round, there is observation and recording of bird, flora and fauna sightings, especially in our woodland. On wet days there is sorting alpaca fleece, cleaning the barns and ironing guest linen. Every day, regardless of the weather, there is feeding the alpacas and de-pooping the fields. Oh, and the dog will love playing frisbee with you, all day if she can!

On the smallholding, there is a wonderful diversity of birdlife from kites and buzzards to nuthatch, warblers, heron and the occasional pheasant. If you are lucky the local polecat might be about. There are extensive walks from here. Further afield, the Elan valley is a short drive away, as is Hafren forest. The mid-Wales art centre is about 15 miles away as is the railway station. Within an hour’s car journey are Welshpool, Aberystwyth and Brecon. Our nearest shops are seven miles away in the delightful historical small town of Llanidloes which boasts a range of independent shops including a weekly market, a community craft centre and café, a vegan café and the Welsh National Quilt centre with occasional exhibitions and craft fairs.
The map shows the approximate area. The exact location is shared once a stay is confirmed.
