The Mansion is a beautiful exclusive-use country house near Gorebridge, just outside Edinburgh, set in the rolling Midlothian countryside. We host weddings, private celebrations, and exclusive stays, so no two days look quite the same — one week it might be dressing the house for a wedding, the next it's general upkeep and getting the gardens ready for guests.
The best bits for volunteers:
- Your own space in a beautiful setting, comfortable accommodation on a historic country estate, away from the noise of city life.
- Edinburgh on your doorstep, close enough for days off exploring one of Europe's most beautiful capital cities, while still being tucked away in the quiet of Midlothian countryside.
- Varied, hands-on work, a mix of hospitality, grounds, and general property tasks, so you'll pick up a genuinely broad range of skills, not just one repetitive job.
- Small, friendly team, you'll be working closely with me and a tight-knit crew, not lost in a huge operation.
If you're looking for free, comfortable accommodation on a historic Scottish estate in exchange for varied, hands-on work and you love old buildings, countryside, and being part of something a bit different, Kirkhill is a great fit. You'll pick up new skills, have Edinburgh on your doorstep for days off, and leave with a proper soft spot for Scotland.
This is hands-on, varied work across both properties, what you're doing changes week to week depending on what's going on. You'll get stuck into a mix of:
Gardening & grounds upkeep — keeping the estate looking its best
Room renovations, helping refresh and update guest rooms
Cleaning, turning rooms around between guests to a high standard
Moving furniture, setting up and reconfiguring spaces for events, weddings, and guest stays
There's no fixed routine, some weeks you'll be heads-down on a renovation project, other weeks it's more hospitality and turnover work. It's a genuinely broad mix, so you'll leave with a real range of practical skills, not just one repetitive task.
Accommodation
Private Room & Private Bathroom
You'll have your own private room in the house, room sizes vary, sleeping anywhere from two up to five people depending on availability, so you'll always have your own space to retreat to. Bedding and towels are provided, so no need to pack your own.
Not all rooms have individual desks in them, but we have a shared workspace in the common areas of the house if you need to get online or get some work done.

Local area
We're set in Gorebridge, Midlothian, right on the Borders Railway, so Edinburgh Castle, Old Town and nightlife are just a quick train ride away. Nearby, Rosslyn Chapel and Borthwick Castle offer two of Scotland's most striking historic sites, while the Pentland Hills give you proper hill walking with views back over the city.
Closer to home, Gore Glen has lovely woodland walks along old mill lades, and Dalkeith Country Park (1,000 acres, plus the Restoration Yard café) is a short drive away.
Fancy two wheels? The Innocent Railway path is a scenic old railway line leading right into Edinburgh, and the National Mining Museum Scotland in nearby Newtongrange tells the story of the area's coal-mining past.
On a quiet evening, the village's own Beacon Café is a cosy spot for breakfast and home baking. Quiet countryside on your doorstep, with Edinburgh's culture and energy never far away.
