The property is a 17th-century Welsh longhouse set in 11.5 acres in a very beautiful rural location in upland West Wales. 1.5 acres of this is a varied, mainly naturalistic garden that we have created ourselves. The remaining land, which includes an upland stream and 2 small wildlife ponds, consists of 6 fields which we manage with our small flock of local-breed Badger-faced sheep. Two of the meadows are now harvested for hay in a semi-manual, traditional way & all the meadows now have increasingly diverse floral & fungal populations. Any volunteer can expect a potentially wide range of home, garden and land management tasks depending on the season and weather. Examples might include weeding, plant propagation, pruning, hedge management, hay making, & painting and decorating. In other words, the huge range of tasks that we tackle every year to look after and improve the property as its current stewards. We're very happy to share the knowledge and experience that we've accumulated over the years with any visitors & feel that Julian's scientific insights into how we now plan & manage both garden & land could be of interest to potential volunteers. Due to the location, volunteers will need their own transport.

Short-term, occasional, and seasonal assistance with different aspects of managing the garden, land and occasionally livestock (sheep). It always varies from day to day, according to seasons and weather. Most of it is non-technical, and there will be many opportunities to learn how we do things - sometimes in unconventional ways, which we've established work well for us.

There's a wealth of wonderful hilly landscape immediately surrounding us. Further afield, the stunning Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire coastline - about 40 minutes drive from us, and where we now tend to head for our holidays- has miles of clearly marked cliff top footpaths, which are invariably quiet, with many secluded coastal beaches and coves. As well as attractive coastal towns at Aberystwyth, Aberaeron, New Quay, Cardigan and Fishguard. Inland are the market towns of Lampeter, Llandeilo and the county town of Carmarthen. There are a few excellent National Trust properties, as well as the nationally significant gardens at Aberglasney and the National Botanic Gardens of Wales. One can walk or cycle into the extensive Brechfa Forest, from our doorstep. There aren't too many very local options for meals out or pubs, but plenty of choices if you don't mind a short drive. The local soundscape is very peaceful, and we're blessed with wonderful dark skies for stargazing.

The map shows the approximate area. The exact location is shared once a stay is confirmed.
