About

Welcome to our 40 acre eco farm and sanctuary, where compassion for animals, care for the land and community living come together. We are a pioneering, non profit, slaughter free organic dairy farm, dedicated to demonstrating a kinder and more compassionate way of farming. Our cows are never sent to slaughter. When their milking years are over, they are allowed to retire peacefully and live out their lives on the farm. We also lovingly raise our male calves, with the vision of working alongside them on the land. Life here is varied and hands on. Volunteers can get involved with caring for our cows, milking, gardening, growing herbs and vegetables, making compost, maintaining the land, cooking and helping with the many projects involved in developing a working eco farm. There is lots to build, develop and learn, and volunteers have the opportunity to be part of the farm's growth from an early stage. Our way of life is influenced by Krishna bhakti yoga, vegetarianism and the principle of Ahimsa - compassion and non violence towards all living beings. We welcome people from all backgrounds who are open minded, compassionate and enjoy living close to nature. If you love animals, the countryside, practical work and being part of a community, we would love to welcome you. Come and learn, contribute, meet people from around the world and be part of something meaningful. We need practical, enthusiastic volunteers to help us care for our animals, develop the land and support the day to day running of the farm throughout the year. Our main areas of work include: • Cow care: feeding, grooming, cleaning, moving cows and helping with milking • Gardening and horticulture: planting, weeding, harvesting and developing our growing areas • Land and farm maintenance: fencing, clearing, repairs, landscaping and general upkeep • Working with dairy: Making butter, yoghurt, pasteurising milk, cleaning bottles. • Cooking and household tasks: helping prepare vegetarian meals and keep communal spaces clean and organised The work changes with the seasons. Spring and summer bring more gardening, planting and work with the land, while autumn and winter involve harvesting, maintenance and preparing the farm for the colder months. No previous farming required. What matters most to us is a willingness to learn, get stuck in, work as part of a team and care for the animals.

We also have two caravans just a minute’s walk from the main farmhouse, one with a single bed and one with a double bed. There is enough storage, with tables, shelves and space for your belongings. Towels and bedding are provided. Volunteers also have access to our office, conservatory and conference room, which can be used by anyone who needs a quiet place to work or study, as well as Wi-Fi, laundry and drying facilities. We have a very spacious lounge and a beautiful dining table where we share meals and spend time together. We also have private tents which we can set up!

Local area

Surrounded by the beautiful countryside of Rutland, so there’s plenty to explore and enjoy on your days off. Rutland Water is one of our favourite places nearby and is just a short bike ride away. We also have cycles available for volunteers to use. There are lovely walks and cycling routes around the reservoir, as well as woodland, open countryside, wildlife and beautiful views across the water. It’s a great place to spend a few hours walking, birdwatching, exploring or simply enjoying nature. Oakham and Uppingham are our local market towns, with cafés, independent shops, markets and places to explore. We also love nearby Stamford, a beautiful historic town with wonderful old buildings, independent shops, cafés and countryside around it. For a bigger town experience, Peterborough is also within easy reach, with plenty of shops, restaurants, entertainment and cultural attractions.

The map shows the approximate area. The exact location is shared once a stay is confirmed.
