About

For anyone who would like a first hand insight of a traditional working hill farm, we have it here. Our Family have been here for a hundred years or more raising Dalesbred Sheep and the original small Angus cattle. Recently we have acquired Mangalitza pigs, partly because we like the quality of their marbled meat, but mainly for their primal instinctive behaviour which we are studying to devise ways of managing them to regenerate ecosystems. www.raisedwithnature.uk We also take visitors to the Dales. The Dalesway footpath runs up our riverbank bringing guests from all parts of the world. The main Bed and Breakfast season is tailing off now and it would be helpful to have someone to help me do end of season cleaning and maintainance until Christmas. At this time we make Christmas cakes. After Christmas it is all change, the pigs should have prepared land for extending the area of Pannage and the real hard work starts digging up trees I've been growing in the croft down here and planting them up in the Deer Park which is covered in bracken. This is not work for the frail and can be cold working at 1,200 feet. It is really tough going with quite a lot of heavy lifting- but this work seems to be generating quite a lot of interest with conservationists. Along with pigs inevitably how ever hard you try to get things right, there comes fencing, again that requires strength and tenacity. Working away from the farm, we work until we get the job done. Farming is not regular hours I'm afraid, but you will sleep well at night and be very well fed.

Accommodation

Private Room & Private Bathroom
This bedroom and en-suite bathroom with bath is available from now until Christmas. Our usual "live in" en-suite bedroom which is smaller and looks onto the farm yard is being used at the moment. Before Christmas it would be helpful to have someone in the house to help with end of season cleaning and general helping around. After Christmas it will be hard work outside in sometimes cold snowy weather- and probably in the smaller en-suite room that looks onto the farm yard. We have two black spaniels Ruby and Pepper that are a part of the household.

Information

Meals

3 meals per day

Eat with the family. Generally I do the cooking, but it would be useful to have someone who can feed the farm men if I am not here. No day is the same. In general, I could do with someone to help in the house before Christmas. Then after Christmas it will be heavey outside work, planting trees and feeding stock. We are foodies and produce most of our own meat. Bacon curing and sausage making should be happening this winter.

Local area

It really depends on the interest of the person. Malham is a honey pot for tourists because of the geological features. Grassington for those people who are into James Herriot and "All Creatures Great and Small". The carpark in the village ten minutes walk away is often filled with the white vans of the film crew for this which is filmed all around here. Haworth and the Bronte's are on the literary list often, but being central to the National Park, people come mostly to walk and cycle. We are en-route of the "Tour de France". The Dalesway runs up our river bank. We are also on Lady Ann's Way and the Inn Way. We are the overnight stop for long distance walkers. The Settle Carlisle railway is a good way to see The Dales from a historic train if you get the timing right and book a seat. there are also many old castles to visit. Livestock people like to visit the Auction Marts. Skipton, Hawes and Leyburn. The chaps are busy right now selling lambs. Summer time there are the country shows.

The map shows the approximate area. The exact location is shared once a stay is confirmed.
